I want to dye a strand of my hair purple would I have to bleach it?

I have dark brown hair and I really don't want to bleach it because I LOVE my hair color I just want a couple of pieces purple (If you know what I mean) (And I want to get the violet hot topic hair dye kit) So would I have to bleach my hair?
